Ink Recreation: Starry Night

Starry Night (Stippled Edition)
Time Taken: 14 hours, 53 minutes
Medium: Ink (Stippling Technique)

This piece is a personal recreation of Vincent van Gogh’s iconic Starry Night, brought to life through the intricate and meditative technique of stippling. Originally painted in 1889, Starry Night captures the swirling energy of the night sky above the French town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh’s bold brushstrokes and vivid color palette convey a sense of movement, emotion, and dreamlike beauty that has fascinated art lovers for over a century.

In my recreation, I sought to channel the same ethereal energy but through my favorite form of shading: stippling. Every shadow, highlight, and swirl in the sky is crafted through thousands of tiny ink dots, building depth and texture unique to this technique. This method allowed me to reimagine the bold dynamism of Van Gogh’s original in a way that feels personal and tactile, while paying homage to his distinctive style. The process was both time-consuming and deeply rewarding, requiring intense focus but resulting in a piece that I’m incredibly proud of.

By translating the iconic scene into stippling, I aimed to explore how one of the most recognizable paintings in the world could be transformed through subtle shifts in shading and texture, bringing a new perspective to the familiar swirling skies, glowing stars, and looming cypress tree. This piece celebrates both Van Gogh’s legacy and my love for the delicate art of stippling.
