Using AI in Missions: Equipping Latin American Missionaries for Kingdom Work

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way we communicate, work, and share information—but what role does it play in missions? While AI can never replace the personal relationships and Spirit-led calling that define mission work, it can be a powerful tool for expanding reach, improving efficiency, and supporting missionaries as they share the Gospel.

As part of the Using AI in Missions project for Brad and Kristy Weinert with WGM, I had the privilege of developing a training resource to help Latin American missionaries understand and utilize AI effectively. As Mobilizers for Latin America, Brad and Kristy work with Latin Americans joining WGM as missionaries, guiding them through the process of stepping into cross-cultural ministry. This AI training is designed to equip these new missionaries with digital tools that can support their work, enhance communication, and streamline administrative tasks—allowing them to focus more on their calling.

The Goals of the Project

This AI training project was designed to:

  1. Educate Latin American missionaries on how AI can support rather than replace human connection in ministry.
  2. Equip them with practical skills in AI-powered tools like ChatGPT and ElevenLabs for content creation, translation, and communication.
  3. Empower them to use AI ethically and responsibly in their missionary efforts, helping them navigate the challenges of digital ministry.

Why AI is an Important Tool for Missions

AI is not about replacing the human element of missions—it’s about making the work more effective and accessible. Here’s why AI is particularly valuable for Latin American missionaries:
Breaking Language Barriers – AI-powered translation tools allow missionaries to communicate across languages more effectively, whether for newsletters, sermons, or real-time conversations.
Creating Ministry Resources – AI can assist in writing newsletters, Bible study materials, social media posts, and training content, helping missionaries share their message efficiently.
Administrative Efficiency – Many missionaries handle multiple responsibilities. AI can automate scheduling, draft reports, and manage communication, freeing up more time for direct ministry.
Enhancing Storytelling – AI-powered audio and video tools like ElevenLabs can generate high-quality voiceovers in multiple languages, making it easier to share testimonies and teachings.
Personalized Engagement – AI chatbots and automated responses can help manage prayer requests, discipleship follow-ups, and support inquiries, ensuring no one feels unheard.

Final Thoughts

For decades, missionaries have embraced innovation—from the printing press to radio broadcasts—to spread the Gospel. AI is simply the next step in that progression. When used wisely and ethically, AI can empower missionaries to communicate better, reach more people, and focus on the heart of their ministry.

Through this project with Brad and Kristy Weinert and WGM, we’ve taken a step toward equipping Latin American missionaries with the tools they need to navigate digital ministry with confidence. As they step into their calling, AI will be one of many resources that help them serve, connect, and share Christ’s love with the world.
